This article will aim to illustrate the difference between the reports especially when Stores are set to Weighted Average.
When a store creates and confirms a reduction at a cost price (R10.90 as shown in this example), the cost price will reflect on the Reduction Listing Report.
If a delivery is subsequently captured and confirmed, and the cost price changes to R11.65, the Delivery and Delivery Listing Reports will reflect the updated cost price, as shown below.
This scenario occurs within the same stock period, with the stock movement taking place in a store that uses the Weighted Average Cost method.
As a result of the weighted average calculation, the new cost price becomes R11.05.
The Store Summary Report and Stock Movement Report will then reflect the new weighted average cost price of R11.05 (11.05 x 24 = 265.20), as these reports are dynamic and display the current cost price for the item.
This demonstrates why the Listing Reports are considered a snapshot of the cost price at the specific point in time when each transaction occurred and, therefore, cannot be directly compared to the Summary and Stock Movement Reports.
The summary and movement reports are an aggregation of all snapshots throughout the stock period and reflect the resulting weighted average cost.
In other words, the reports are designed to answer different questions. The Listing Reports show what the cost price was when each transaction occurred, while the Summary Reports show the weighted average cost after all transactions for the period have been taken into account. For this reason, differences between the reports are expected and do not indicate an error.
